The Minnesota Star Tribune rebranded standard graphics

The Star Tribune rebranded and redesigned in mid-2024, including all typography and standard color palettes. This graphics color set is adapted slightly from the brand palette to fit the needs and challenges of charts and maps specifically, and optimized for CMYK printing. The set is a welcome change from a long history of muted shades our team used for many years, while also transitioning us to the same sans serif typeface for both print and digital uses.

This set also included a second set of red, dark blue and yellow tints and shades that we primarily use for elections.

Star Tribune standard graphics

A sample of print and digital styles we’ve defined for a variety of standard charting and mapping that we tackle on a daily basis, netting 12 to 15 individual graphics each week, plus projects.

I created the Star Tribune’s first digital graphics styleguide with color and type styles around 2019, and we’ve adjusted over time with advances in our technology, but the core identity remains the same for daily work.

Star Tribune digital elections

While primary elections are a different ballgame depending on parties and races, we’ve leaned into a standard color palette for general elections during the last couple cycles.

I designed the Star Tribune’s first newsroom-driven digital election suite of guides and live results in 2018 — previously overseen by our product team — and we’ve been iterating ever since. Now as a project manager for election data and graphics, this preset color identity helps keep us all aligned while allowing for flexibility.

Star Tribune COVID-19 coverage

When we first spun up our COVID-19 tracker in 2020, I knew that we would need a special color identity to keep us consistent, while avoiding reds or panic-inducing vibrancy. These were largely used for our coronavirus tracking products, but also extended into digital enterprise storytelling.
